Consul General Maher Conducts November Press Conference

Naha, November 28 - In his regular monthly press conference, Consul General Kevin Maher answered questions on important local issues. When asked about specific details of the base consolidation agreement and the construction of the Futenma Replacement Facility at Camp Schwab in Northern Okinawa, the Consul General stressed that the goal of the project is to relocate the capabilities of the airfield, not simply to move the existing structures. Since many of MCAS Futenma's capabilities are currently located outside of the base proper, it is only natural that these be incorporated in the replacement facility's design. The Consul General stressed the importance of implementing the agreed base realignment plan in a timely manner in order to decrease the burden of our military presence in Okinawa, while enhancing bilateral alliance capabilities.

When asked about the arrival of 30 Marine Corps F-18 fighter aircraft and 600 personnel at Kadena Air Force base for a joint training exercise, Consul General Maher stressed the necessity of joint US Air Force and Marine Corps training to ensure both forces' ability to cooperate in the defense of Japan.

As before, November's press conference was well attended by members of the local media and was prominently featured in several newspapers and broadcasts.
