US Navy Minesweepers visit Yonaguni
On June 24-26, two Navy minesweepers, the Patriot and Guardian, visited Yonaguni Island with the support of the U.S. Consulate General. As a part of the visit, crew members cleaned up a nearby beach and hosted a barbeque for island residents.
U.S. Navy ships visit Japanese ports throughout the country every year, based on access accorded under the U.S.-Japan Status of Forces Agreement. Ship visits are designed to promote goodwill and cultural exchange, allow for crew rest and replenishment, and raise awareness of the U.S. commitment to defend Japan under the Mutual Security Treaty.
