On August 31, Consul General Kevin Maher briefed approximately 30 senior Korean writers visiting Okinawa as part of their tour of U.S. Military and Japan Self Defense Force facilities in Japan. The tour was sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Seoul and supported by U.S. Embassy Tokyo, U.S. Forces Japan, the Okinawa Area Field Office (OAFO) and U.S. Consulate General Naha. Earlier in the day, Deputy Consul General Carmela Conroy also sat down with the group.

While on the island, the group also received briefings and toured Kadena Air Base, Camp Courtney, and Marine Corps Air Station Futenma. In addition, the group visited the Japan Self Defense Forcefs Naha Air Base to receive briefings on the Southwestern Composite Air Division, 1st Combined Brigade and Fleet Air Wing 5. The group also toured Shuri Castle and the Okinawa Peace Park.
