RELO Visits Okinawa

State Department Regional English Language Officer Damon Anderson addresses participants in a forum on English language education during his visit to Okinawa.

On February 15-18, Regional English Language Officer Damon Anderson visited for the first time since formally assuming responsibility for Japanese programs. As a part of his visit, he conducted initial courtesy calls on Okinawa Board of Education Superintendent Yoei Nakasone and Okinawa International Exchange Executive Director Akira Yamauchi. He also spoke before 70 participants at the Okinawa Prefectural Senior High School English Teachersf Association gForum in consideration of English Education.h He lectured for more than an hour on gWhat makes a good English program.h Afterwards, he led a smaller one-hour breakout session on gIssues and Challenges in ELT for Asia."

The following day Anderson traveled to northern Okinawa Island to speak and offer advice to four representatives of Nago City, who are  spearheading the municipalityfs efforts to establish a bilingual school in the area. During a subsequent courtesy call on Meio University President Eiki Senaha, Anderson discussed the possibility of conducting various workshops and/or teacher training programs. For his final program, Anderson addressed teachers in training to become immersion school teachers at the Okinawa Prefectural Education Center on "What makes a good English program."
